Functional Mushrooms · Buyer’s Guide

Some mushrooms are for cooking. Others, called functional mushrooms, are valued for how they support the body: focus, energy, immune health, stress and skin.* A mushroom complex is a supplement that combines two or more of these mushrooms in one capsule. Which one is right for you depends on your goal, and a few details on the label show what’s actually inside. Here’s what to check, and which 3rd Planet MycoRev formula matches it.

What Is a Mushroom Complex Supplement?

A mushroom complex supplement combines extracts of two or more functional mushrooms, the species valued for more than flavor, such as shiitake, reishi, lion’s mane and cordyceps.

Each species has its own research focus: shiitake and maitake for immune activity, lion’s mane for focus and mood, cordyceps for energy, tremella for skin. A good blend groups the species that share one goal. So ask two questions of any mushroom complex: which goal is it built for, and does the label show enough for you to check it?

Mushroom label terms in plain English

Fruiting body
The mushroom you would recognize: the cap and stem.
Mycelium
The root-like threads a mushroom grows from, often grown on grain for supplements.
Sclerotium
A hard mass some fungi form instead of a cap. Chaga’s is the black growth on birch trees, the part traditionally harvested.
Extract ratio
How much dried mushroom went into the extract. 8:1 means eight parts concentrated into one.
Beta-glucans
Chains of sugar molecules in mushroom cell walls, the compounds most measured in immune research.
Assay
A lab test that measures how much of a compound a batch contains.

Four Things to Check on a Mushroom Label

1. Which part of the mushroom is used

Look for fruiting body (or, for chaga, sclerotium) beside each species. Many mushroom products are mycelium grown on grain, and the grain stays in the powder. A total “polysaccharide” (sugar-chain) figure can then include grain starch, which is why a laboratory method for measuring beta-glucan in mushroom products1 measures starch separately and reports beta-glucan on its own.

On the MycoRev labels each mushroom is an organic fruitbody extract, with one exception: the chaga in MycoRev Tonic is a sclerotium extract.

2. The extract ratio and the real extract weight

An extract ratio tells you how concentrated an extract is by weight: at 8:1, eight grams of dried mushroom become one gram of extract. It cannot tell you how much of a particular compound is in that gram. That is the job of an assay, the third check.

The clearest labels print two numbers: the extract weight in the capsule and the weight of dried mushroom it came from. A label that prints only the dried mushroom weight, often called a ‘raw equivalent,’ makes a capsule sound larger than it is. The MycoRev Immune label, for example, lists Shiitake 8:1 organic fruitbody extract 200 mg, from 1.6 g of shiitake, per one-capsule serving. Readers curious about why these mushrooms are studied for immune health can turn to our page on functional mushrooms and immune support.

3. Measured compounds, not just species names

Two extracts of one mushroom can carry very different amounts of beta-glucans. In a laboratory study of a reishi, shiitake and maitake formula4, researchers first tested nine commercial extracts for beta-glucans and starch, then chose their extracts on those results. Assay figures rarely fit on a Supplement Facts panel, so look for them in what the brand publishes about the product.

MycoRev mushroom extracts are tested for active compounds in every batch. Beta-glucan content is 15% for shiitake, 8% for maitake, 15% for reishi, 2% for chaga and 6% for tremella. Reishi also contains 4% triterpenes (bitter compounds typical of reishi), and cordyceps contains 0.3% cordycepin, its signature compound.

4. How the extract was made

Not every useful compound in a mushroom comes out the same way. Beta-glucans dissolve in hot water, so for mushrooms valued mainly for their beta-glucans, a hot-water extract does the job. That’s how the shiitake, maitake and tremella in 3rd Planet formulas are made. Other compounds, like the bitter triterpenes in reishi, barely dissolve in water and need alcohol to come out. For those mushrooms, dual extraction with both water and alcohol captures the full range. 3rd Planet uses it for reishi, chaga, cordyceps and lion’s mane. That’s how the reishi extract carries both 15% beta-glucans and 4% triterpenes, and the cordyceps extract its 0.3% cordycepin. Beta-glucans sit at the center of the research on immune balance, which our article on mushroom immunomodulation research reviews in plain terms.

The MycoRev Formulas, Label by Label

The 3rd Planet functional mushroom line has five mushroom formulas. Every amount below is from the Supplement Facts label, per one-capsule serving.

Immune support: MycoRev Immune

MycoRev Immune contains Shiitake 8:1 organic fruitbody extract 200 mg (from 1.6 g), Maitake 8:1 organic fruitbody extract 110 mg (from 1.1 g) and Reishi 16:1 organic fruitbody extract 90 mg (from 1.44 g). Its reishi is the most concentrated extract in the line.

In a randomized trial in healthy young adults who ate shiitake2, four weeks of eating dried shiitake was followed by greater growth of two types of immune cells and more secretory IgA, an antibody lining the mouth and gut. A placebo-controlled trial of reishi extract in older women3 measured changes in T lymphocytes, the white blood cells that coordinate immune responses, over eight weeks. And the laboratory study in check 3 found that reishi, shiitake and maitake together produced a stronger response in human immune cells than each alone would predict.

Everyday foundation: MycoRev Tonic

MycoRev Tonic contains Chaga 8:1 organic sclerotium extract 200 mg (from 1.6 g), Cordyceps 8:1 organic fruitbody extract 75 mg (from 750 mg) and Lion’s Mane 8:1 organic fruitbody extract 125 mg (from 1.0 g). 3rd Planet designs it as an all-round foundation for energy, immune function and mental clarity that the other formulas can sit alongside.

Chaga is a traditional northern European tonic prized for its antioxidant compounds. Cordyceps has been studied for energy: in a placebo-controlled trial of Cordyceps militaris5, twelve active young men who took an extract before a cycling test had higher resting oxygen uptake and faster reaction times after exercise than on placebo.

Stress and stamina: MycoRev Adapt

MycoRev Adapt contains Rhodiola 3.5:1 root extract 200 mg (from 700 mg of Rhodiola rosea root, containing rosavins 6.0 mg and salidroside 2.0 mg, its marker compounds) and Cordyceps 8:1 organic fruitbody extract 100 mg (from 1.0 g). Rhodiola is an adaptogen, an herb studied for how it helps the body handle physical and mental stress.

A 2025 meta-analysis of rhodiola and endurance6 pooled 26 randomized trials in 668 healthy people and found improvements in VO2max (the most oxygen the body can use in hard exercise) and time to exhaustion, with lower markers of muscle damage after exercise.

Focus and mood: MycoRev Neuro

MycoRev Neuro contains Lion’s Mane 8:1 organic fruitbody extract 200 mg (from 1.6 g), a turmeric rhizome (root) extract 150 mg (containing curcuminoids 52.5 mg and curcumin 42.7 mg, turmeric’s active compounds) and Tartary buckwheat 10:1 extract 50 mg (from 0.5 g). 3rd Planet identifies the turmeric as CurQfen, a patented curcumin form.

In a small placebo-controlled study of lion’s mane7, 41 healthy adults aged 18 to 45 were faster on the Stroop test, a timed attention task, an hour after their first serving, with a trend toward lower self-reported stress after 28 days.

Skin hydration: MycoRev Derma

MycoRev Derma contains Tremella 8:1 organic fruitbody extract 250 mg (from 2 g) and Opextan 12.5:1 olive fruit extract 100 mg (from 1.25 g). Tremella makes polysaccharides that hold large amounts of water, and 3rd Planet describes Opextan as rich in hydroxytyrosol, an olive antioxidant.

In laboratory work on tremella polysaccharides8, they protected skin cells from ultraviolet damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

QDo functional mushroom supplements contain psilocybin?
No. Psilocybin comes from so-called magic mushrooms, which are different species. None of the mushrooms in this guide is psychoactive.
QWhat else is in the capsules?
Every MycoRev capsule is hypromellose, a plant-based shell, and every formula includes buckwheat. MycoRev Adapt also lists potato maltodextrin, and MycoRev Neuro lists fenugreek seed, so check the Other Ingredients list if you have a food allergy.
QAre the mushrooms organic?
Every mushroom extract on the MycoRev labels is listed as organic. The rhodiola, turmeric, Tartary buckwheat and olive extracts carry no organic claim.
QDoes the FDA approve mushroom supplements?
No. Under the FDA guidance cited above, supplements are not approved before sale, and the manufacturer is responsible for an accurate label.
QHow is an extract different from mushrooms I cook with?
An extract concentrates the mushroom and removes most of the fiber and water, so one capsule carries compounds from a much larger amount of dried mushroom.
